Downgrading to iPhone 3G Software 2.2 from 2.2.1?

UPDATE 1: Click here to see how I downgraded from iPhone firmware 2.2.1 to 2.2!

UPDATE 2: iPhone firmware 2.2.1 jailbreak released by QuickPWN.  Click here for information.

I know this posting will bore a majority of my once a day blog readers.  Bare with me since I’ve recently become obsessed with jailbreaking my iPhone.

So, my iTunes automatically (I think?!?) upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.2.1 from firmware 2.2.  Great.  It supposedly fixes some bugs – especially with Safari crashing.  I’m all for that.  But, it also ruins all the “work” you may have recently done  jailbreaking your iPhone with QuickPwn.

The bad news: If you upgrade to iPhone software 2.2.1, there is supposedly no way to downgrade back to software 2.2 and your phone is restored to a pre-jailbreak state. Please correct me if I’m wrong in the comment section of my posting – I’ve done way too much searching tonight and haven’t found anything.

The good news: Your phone still works and will be restored to the pre-jailbroken state.  The Dev-Team at QuickPwn – per their firmware 2.2.1 forum – expects to have a fix up and running within the next few days.  After the upgrade from iPhone firmware 2.1 to 2.2 occurred, I guess it took them 3 days to get QuickPwn updated.  We can obviously all wait a few days but where’s the donate button on their page?!?

Again, I’m new to jailbreaking but Apple must do this to simply fck around with hackers.  If Apple wanted to help “Joe the iPhone User” out, they’d have a software upgrade that allows for copy/paste, landcape typing, a video recorder, etc. and then there would be no reason to jailbreak an iPhone.  Ok, I take that back – there will always be a reason to hack something and make it better.

  1. hi

i hope you are not right!!!! because i did the same mistake just a few hours ago and i am still searching for a solution…..
can i downgrade to 1.1.4 and begin from new????
it is the first time that something like that happened to me…

    thank you for your help.
    christian

  2. get a windows media phone and you can jailbreak to your heart is content and download anytype of app that you would like. Doesn’t jailbreaking it void the warranty?

  3. Then I wouldn’t have a dope music player, camera, camcorder, mini computer, etc. in my pocket. My old Treo was a windows media phone. The only benefit was being able to use slingbox. Everything else SUCKED a$$. As for warranty, you simply restore the phone back to it’s pre-jailbroken state and you’re all set. Well, until Apple gets better at figuring out a way to tell if your phone has been “compromised” by a jailbreak.

  4. got all of those on my windows media phone, plus a built in recorder and I can view edit any type of office file.

don’t compare that crappy treo to the phones now. Now if windows mobile 7 ever comes out, then your 500 non insurable iphone will be worthless.

  5. Hey.. I successfully downgraded from 2.2.1 to 2.2 on windows by pressing “shift” and selecting restore and then chose firmware 2.2 that i downloaded to jailbreak … and it has worked fine.. in fact it is asking me to upgrade to 2.2.1

  6. Well, i messed up my phone. Working to city jailbreak it, I state jail it. I was ignorent to use the jail break on the 2.2.1. then I realized that that wouldnt work. before I got an error, I had all the ipw files and I pressed shif restore, but now they dont exist instead it takes me to the pw whatever folder.

  7. I believe ozzie 84 has a 2G phone. This makes sense since he’s one of a seemingly million people that can’t downgrade back to 2.2 from 2.2.1.

The shift + restore with the 2.2 ipsw file is giving an unknown error for those with an iPhone 3G.

After the unknown error screen pops after doing shift + restore of the 2.2 ipsw file, you can run QuickPWN 2.2 to jailbreak your phone but it will delete your phones contents. You will be back to firmware 2.2 but – again – all of your contents (contacts, music, videos, etc.) will be gone.

Once you realize you can’t live without your phone’s contents – my back-up is from 1/16/09 – you can restore to a previously backed up version and you’re phone will be all better again.

Though, by “all better again,” I mean you’ll have all the contents back on your iPhone 3G but it won’t be jailbroken. The 2.2.1 update should be announced anytime on QuickPWN’s website and/or Dev-Team blog.

  8. the shift-restore-choose 2.2 firmware software previously downloaded and the quickpwn on the error message…
    worked for me.
    Thanks
