The First Pictures from Radiohead – Lollapalooza – Grant Park – Chicago – Illinois

Well, maybe the posting title is a little off.  But, the first (and last) pictures from tonight’s concert posted on BccList.com.

Great set if you REALLY like “In Rainbows.”  Really good set if you like the most recent album but wanted to see more from the past.  Regardless, excellent concert.  Hot as fck.

Taken from my iPhone.  The picture quality is so-so at night but I’m not complaining.

Bell’s is (Finally) Back in Chicago!

The question is, for how long or when will the imminent lawsuit(s) ensue?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-080731bells-returns,0,7243566.story

“Bell’s Brewery Inc. beers are headed back to the Windy City nearly two years after the company pulled its brands out of the Chicago market following a nasty dispute with a distributor.

Comstock, Mich.-based Bell’s Brewery on Thursday announced new distribution agreements with Central Beverage Co., Schamberger Brothers and Skokie Valley Beverage Co. that will mark the return of Bell’s brands in Chicago beginning Friday.

Bell’s, makers of Oberon Ale, Bell’s Amber, and Kalamazoo Stout, left the Chicago market in late 2006 after a fight with its distributor at the time, National Wine and Spirits Inc., which had sold the rights to distribute the Bell’s brands to another distributor, Chicago Beverage Systems. Illinois state law basically forbids beer companies from jumping to one distributor to another without a buyout or some other agreement. Instead of paying, Bell’s owner and co-founder Larry Bell decided to pull his brands out of the state even though the market accounted for more than 10 percent of his sales.

Mack, thank you.

Social Networking Sites Are Definitely Dead/Dying

Note: UPDATES AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POSTING!

As previously mentioned, I’m truly not a billionaire hater – but, Rupert Murdoch’s $580 million purchase of MySpace was stupid. That is, unless the deal has already somehow paid itself off in 3 years. If that’s the case, I stand corrected.

Reasons it was a stupid investment being a) facebook (I’ve embarrassingly joined recently but I’m glad I graduated from MySpace) kicks MySpace’s a$$ hands down and b) social networking is dead or in the process of dying.

Why is facebook better than MySpace will ever be? It’s built by geeks. Note: I love geeks. Anywho, the reportedly cocky CEO (Mark Zuckerberg) seems like a dork. A very, very wealthy dork. But, he knows how the build things people want – a clean interface (for the most part) without too many annoying customizations, a kick a$$ mobile platform for those that have the capability to access sites via blackberries/smart phones/i phones, and text message alerts allowing you to actually manage some features of your account via a simple text message.

I messed around with MySpace mobile a little bit last night. It was worthless. MySpace will undoubtedly try to implement some of facebook’s technology – if they haven’t already via beta – but, needless to say, they’re behind the times and can’t catch up. Imagine the current day Google vs. Yahoo search engine “battle.”

For what it’s worth, the problem with social networking sites is that none of the sites really offer any value to the user other than the ability to keep up/reconnect with your friends. They’re addictive for a week and then become boring.

Both MySpace and facebook can be compared to Yahoo in the 90’s and Classmates.com in the early 2000’s. Yahoo is in the process of failing as a search engine turned into a search engine/social portal because they didn’t realize the value and money to be made off paid search and not social networking. Classmates.com failed (or isn’t worth as much as it used to be) because it was bland/useless and charged user fees when incepted.

So, congrats to MySpace for ripping off Rupert. Dollars currently spent by advertisers on either website is money worthlessly spent. Let’s see if facebook can start offering users the ability to do more than join some networks, create a witty status message, easily chat with friends currently online (sort of cool), post some picture albums, write on a wall or two, and “rekindle” previous relationships.

If not, we’ll all be laughing in 10 years when everyone jokes, “Remember when MySpace and facebook were popular?”

Congrats to Johan Franzen for Forcing a Game 6 – Penguins Win Game 5 in 3 OTs

If Johan Franzen could have literally cleared the puck ONE LAST TIME instead of shooting it off the board at the worst possible angle with less than a minute to go in the 3rd period and an empty net, the Red Wings could have wrapped this beauty up, eh? Nothing is more exciting than an eventual Game 6 during Conor’s bachelor party. Regardless, Pittsburgh wins Game 5…4-3 in 3 OTs. Fckers.

While sort of shiatty quality, watch seconds 1:05 and 1:10 of the YouTube clip (below) or 40 and 34 seconds left in regulation for Franzen’s lame attempt at being an intelligent/hustling/healthy NHL player.

Side note – Doesn’t Pierre McGuire (announcer from NBC Sports Hockey) look like a human penis with glasses? The resemblance is more uncanny when you see him announcing live from the benches/intermission shows. You make the call…

Tales (and Advice) from the Racquetball Court

Commit this to memory – Do not play racquetball under any circumstance unless you meet the following criteria:

Under 6 foot 3 or under 230 pounds.

Age does not necessarily matter. Actually, the older and sweatier you get (goggles preferred), the better. In fact, when leaving the court as an old sweaty guy, you’ll want to make sure to start up as many weird 10 second conversations with the next group of people entering the court. It makes things very comfortable for all parties involved and gives the aforementioned group something to laugh/talk about as they begin stretching before the game.

Regardless, if you’re looking to pick up the sport, you’ll want to fit either of these profiles:

Racquetball ChampsRacquetball Guy

Now, to the story – as the fam and some friends know, I “tweaked” my back awkwardly playing racquetball. Yes, racquetball. I’m a meat and potatoes guy and I usually stick to the normal core sports like football, basketball, baseball, etc. but I’ve been “conned” (I say that jokingly Andy, Mack, and Shawn) into playing racquetball over the last few months. On a positive note, racquetball was fun at first and actually relieved some stress.

So, my adventures on the court started with a borrowed racquet and a few weekly sessions at the Y that were enjoyable yet always led to some sort of soreness the following night and/or day. But, since I dreamt of becoming a star like Sudsy Monchik, I bought the $49 racquetball package he personally endorsed and even mailed away for the free instructional CD-Rom. I’m not sure why, but, mailing away for the CD sort of felt like Ralphie in the Christmas Story with his Little Orphan Annie Secret Society decoder pin.

A month or so ago during an “intense” game of hitting blue balls (ha, ha) against a wall and chasing it around, I thought I just pulled something and it would get better like it always does. The next day (Friday) I was really sore but by the following morning (Saturday) I was ready for some more racquetball action. After the heated match, my car got towed because I paid to get in the Y lot, it was full, so I parked in the fire lane. Yada, yada, yada….I woke up Sunday and wanted to die but at least I could walk.  A week later I couldn’t walk.

Thanks to some chiropractic, two new pairs of sneakers (east coast verbiage, what?), new ergonomic chair at work, new lumbar support roll, new physical therapist, plus a healthy dose of valium, vicodin and steroids (I’m the new Barry Bonds) I’ve thankfully returned to “normal.”

That is, if normal is being able to sit in one position for less than an hour, working on my knees for at least a few hours a day (ha, ha again), stretching every 1-2 hours, laying on the floor to eat meals, and working/blogging/watching tv in a similar position. But, I can now walk a few blocks without pain (medicine?) after stretching so that’s good.

Lesson learned though I never received Sudsy’s CD-Rom…
