Hopefully, the MSM picks up on any applicable oil spills like they DIDN’T for Katrina and Rita.
Oh yeah, even though gulf production is nothing more than a SMALL drop in the bucket, oil futures could definitely trade higher on Tuesday but should return to normal/actual prices in a week or so. The price as of Monday morning on the global markets is all the way down to $110 a barrel as originally seen on BccList.com here.

Update 1: Gustav has passed but the oil rigs are now in a new hurricane’s wheelhouse – hurricane Ike. Fortunately, there aren’t as many oil platforms on the Texas/Gulf of Mexico border and this is where Ike is supposed to it. Unless the fed decides to stupidly cut the interest rate next Tuesday, oil should continue to trade lower.
Update 2: Three (3) oil rigs are missing after hurricane Ike. Offshore drilling in the gulf seems safe.
Update 3: The above posting is from September 2008. Unfortunately, in April 2010, we had a major oil spill in the gulf of Mexico. Shiat!

IF EACH WELL IS PUMPING AT LEAST 1 MILLION BARRELS A DAY, MY GOD WHAT IS THE PROBLEM, OR IS THE GOV. HOLDING YOU ALL FROM SELLING TO THE USA.

Can anyone tell me how many of the oil rigs are owned by countries other that the U.S. My understanding is that any country can drill an oil well in international waters. I know that BP is British Petroleum, and in today’s international market probably has strong american ties.
Are we going to pass laws that only restrict America from drilling in the Gulf.

One of the biggest problems with oil is the damage which it can produce on the nature. A lot of animals will die because it isnt possible to stop the spread to 100 %. So I Hope that the security will be better in the future.

20% of US domestic oil production comes from the Gulf of Mexico. 25% of our natural gas production also comes from the Gulf.
That’s hardly a “drop in the bucket.”
The blowout is not flowing 2 million barrels per day. It’s flowing about 5,000 barrels per day. Very few individual wells in the Gulf have ever been able to flow more than 20,000 barrels per day.

That’s because the volume of oil spilled as the result of Gustav, Ike, Katrina and Rita combined was tiny… Despite the fact that Ike, Katrina and Rita caused very significant damage to infrastructure.
Drilling and production operations in the US OCS of the Gulf of Mexico have only spilled about 47,000 bbls since 1980. 4.7 billion barrels were produced in this period. Over the “last 15 years, there have been no spills greater than 1,000 bbl from an OCS platform or drilling rig.” Natural oil seeps in the Gulf spill hundreds of thousands of barrels per year into the Gulf every year.
This spill is very bad. It’s worse than the sum total of all accidents in the last 60 years combined. Over the last 30 years, almost 30,000 wells have been drilled in the Gulf with less than 200 blowout-type accidents, most of which were minor and easily controlled.
This incident will be post mortem-ed to death. Accidents are expensive in terms of both lives and money. The industry strives for a 0% incident rate. Anyone who has ever been on an offshore drilling rig is well aware of the lack of tolerance for unsafe practices.
One oil spill to too many. One platform lost is too many and the MSM didn’t report on platform losses and/or environmental impact until now. The United States consumes 40% of its oil from domestic resources. Per your data, 20% of that 40% comes from the gulf of mexico. Compared to the following numbers from May 2007, offshore drilling in the gulf of mexico is a drop in the bucket:

Please pass the word and tell everyone that the United States needs help and to call in every country that has Big Ships to sail to the Gulf and help stop the oil from spreading, BP isnt telling the truth about the spill amount its over 50,000 barrels a day or more, we need China,Japan,Canada,Germany all of our allies to send in ships to save our world. This is a must cause B.P doesnt want it to be known how great this is, why wait when we have the resources from every country.
